DOT Physicals
In order to be able to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), you will be required to undergo a DOT physical exam. The medical examiner will determine your physical and mental ability to be able to safely operate a CMV. This is for your safety and safety of others on the road.
The DOT physical and medical card issued, are valid for up to 2 years and will need to be renewed every 2 years or prior to your expiration date determined by the medical examiner.
Please note, that the medical examiner will determine certification length and or if a referral will need to be made to a specialist for further evaluation.
What does the DOT physical involve?
DOT physicals must be carried out by a doctor or nurse practitioner certified to do DOT medical exams under FMCSA guidelines.
During the exam, you will be asked questions pertaining to your health history and any medications you are taking. Your physical exam covers:
- Blood pressure
- Vision
- Hearing
- Heart and lungs
- Strength of grip and reflexes
- Abdomen
- Spine and range of motion
- Urine dip to check for blood, protein and specific gravity
What to bring:
- State issued ID card
- Any medical records from your primary care provider that pertain to any new or ongoing health problems
- Recent surgical clearance documentation
- If you are diabetic, you must bring recent lab results for hemoglobin A1C and fasting glucose
- If you are diabetic and using insulin, you must also bring Form and your electronic glucose monitor and readings.
Your medical certificate will be filed with FMCSA upon completion. Paper copy is an additional $10
